Situated at the heart of Assynt, the fishing port and village of Lochinver provides a full range of tourist facilities with all tourist information available from the Assynt Visitor Centre.

This Centre was opened during the summer of 1995, and includes interesting and informative displays on the history, culture and natural environment of the area, in addition to a mass of information on local businesses, services and accommodation.

Facilities in the village include two self-service stores, butcher, ships’ chandler, craft and gift shops, garage, petrol, bank, harbour, medical centre, pottery, newsagent, restaurants etc. There is also a children’s play park in the village.

Lochinver is situated approximately a two-hour drive from the Highland capital of Inverness, from where excellent road, rail (including an overnight sleeper from London), and air links are available to the rest of the UK.

Edinburgh and Glasgow are in the region of four and a half to five hours’ driving time away.

Buses operate fairly frequently from Inverness to Ullapool (except Sundays), and local services operate from Ullapool on to Lochinver. The Postbus also runs from Lairg, which is the location of the nearest railway station.
